Â鶹ɫÇ鯬

Work-Study

Work-Study provides eligible Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 students with an opportunity to earn money through part-time employment while gaining work experience and developing professional skills.

Work-Study is earned employment income. It is not a grant paid to the student at the beginning of the semester. Students are paid for hours actually worked through the College payroll process.

Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 participates in both the Federal Work-Study Program and the Texas College Work-Study Program. The Financial Aid Office determines eligibility and the appropriate funding source.

Important: Work-Study is request-based at Â鶹ɫÇ鯬. It is not automatically offered to every eligible student. Students interested in Work-Study must complete the applicable financial aid application and request Work-Study consideration from the Financial Aid Office.

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study, or FCWS, is a federal need-based employment program that allows eligible students to earn wages through approved part-time employment.

To be considered for Federal Work-Study, a student must:

  • Complete the , or FAFSA, for the applicable award year.
  • Complete all documents requested by the Financial Aid Office.
  • Meet the general federal student aid eligibility requirements.
  • Be admitted or accepted for enrollment in an eligible degree or certificate program.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Have remaining financial need after other financial assistance is considered.
  • Remain eligible under the Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
  • Meet employment eligibility requirements established by Human Resources.
  • Remain eligible throughout the employment period.

Federal regulations do not generally require a student to be enrolled half-time to receive Federal Work-Study. As an institutional employment requirement, Galveston College normally requires students working during an attended fall or spring semester to be enrolled in at least 6 eligible credit hours.

Financial Aid may authorize Federal Work-Study during an eligible period of nonattendance when federal requirements are met.

Texas College Work-Study

Texas College Work-Study, or TCWS, is a state-funded employment program for eligible Texas students who demonstrate financial need.

To be considered for Texas College Work-Study, a student must:

  • Be classified as a Texas resident.
  • Complete the , or FAFSA, for the applicable award year.
  • Demonstrate financial need and have remaining unmet cost.
  • Be enrolled at least half-time.
  • Be seeking an eligible degree or certificate.
  • Submit the required Selective Service Statement of Registration Status or qualify for an exemption, when applicable.
  • Meet applicable Texas state financial aid eligibility requirements.
  • Not receive an athletic scholarship during a semester of Texas College Work-Study employment when participation in an intercollegiate sport is a condition of that scholarship.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Meet Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 employment requirements.

A Texas resident who is not a U.S. citizen may be eligible for Texas College Work-Study if the student otherwise meets program requirements and can provide appropriate documentation demonstrating authorization to work in the United States.

Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 makes Work-Study employment reasonably available to eligible students to the extent that funding and qualifying positions are available. Work-Study is request-based and is not automatically included in every eligible student's financial aid offer.

How requests are reviewed, and amounts are determined: The Financial Aid Office reviews Work-Study requests based on program eligibility, demonstrated financial need, completion of required financial aid documents, available Work-Study funding, available positions, the approved wage rate, anticipated hours, and the amount the student can reasonably earn during the employment period. Federal Work-Study, when combined with other financial assistance, may not exceed the student's demonstrated financial need. Students who become eligible later in the year may request consideration while funds and positions remain available.

Employment and earnings: A Work-Study offer is the maximum amount the student is authorized to earn and does not guarantee employment, work hours, or earnings. Students must apply and be selected for an approved position and may not begin work or required paid training until written employment clearance and an approved start date are issued. Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 Work-Study students may work up to 19.5 hours per week, subject to their class schedule, authorized earnings, position requirements, and department needs.

Payment: Work-Study students are paid through the College payroll process for hours actually worked. The payroll period is generally the 16th of one month through the 15th of the following month, and payday is generally the last College workday of the month unless Payroll announces a different schedule. Payment is normally made by direct deposit.

Continued eligibility: Work-Study eligibility may change because of enrollment, Satisfactory Academic Progress, changes in financial need or other financial assistance, program eligibility, available funding, or reaching the authorized earnings limit. Students must stop working when their authorized earnings have been reached, the approved employment period ends, or Financial Aid issues a stop-work notice.

Community service opportunities: Eligible Federal Work-Study students may also be employed in qualifying community-service positions. Students interested in community-service employment should review current openings or contact the Financial Aid Office for available opportunities.

Detailed requirements for work schedules, class-time restrictions, timekeeping, required training, confidentiality, safety, workplace expectations, off-campus employment, student responsibilities, and supervisor responsibilities are contained in the 2026-2027 Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 Work-Study Policy and Procedure Handbook.
