More than halfway through a demanding April road stretch, the Â鶹ɫÇ鯬 softball
team will get a brief respite with a doubleheader at home on Saturday, April 25, when
the Whitecaps host Blinn College at 1 and 3:30 p.m. A tailgate will be held before
the twin bill from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
GC home games and tailgate are free and open to the public.
After their weekend matchup against the Buccaneers, the Whitecaps will head off island
once again on April 27 as GC travels to Alvin College for a South Conference doubleheader
against the Dolphins scheduled for 1 and 3:30 p.m.
GC has won five of its six road games this month, including a pair of victories at
Lamar State College-Port Arthur on April 15 by scores of 9-2 and 13-3. Overall in
April, the Whitecaps are 7-1, improving their season record to 33-11. GC currently
sits at 9-5 in NJCAA Region 14 South Conference play and holds fourth place with 10
games remaining in the regular season.
AC enters next Monday's matchup with a 25-17 overall record and a 12-4 mark in conference
play. The Dolphins are tied for first place in the South Conference with Blinn College
(28-12, 12-4).
In their most recent outing, the Whitecaps outscored LSC-PA 22-5 across the doubleheader.
In the opener, GC jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Seahawks scored in the fourth
and sixth innings. The Whitecaps secured a 9-2 victory behind strong offensive performances
from first baseman Andrea Tagovailoa and right fielder Sammie Paukert, who both homered.
Tagovailoa went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Paukert finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Freshman pitcher Jadyn Struxness threw a complete game, allowing just two runs on
two hits while striking out 13 batters. With the win, Struxness improved to 16-3 on
the season.
The second game followed a different script early on, as LSC-PA built a 3-0 lead through
five innings while holding the Whitecaps scoreless.
GC responded with a decisive rally in the sixth inning, scoring nine runs before adding
four more in the seventh to secure a 13-3 victory.
Second baseman Alayna Davis and first baseman Cassidy Bank each homered in the nightcap.
Davis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Bank finished 1-for-2 with one RBI. Designated
player Riley Riordan added two hits and three RBIs in the win.
In the circle, freshman Daphne Utajara pitched five innings, allowing three runs on
six hits while striking out three. Struxness entered in relief and tossed the final
two innings to secure the win for Utajara, who improved to 11-6 on the season.
