“The Women in Industry Conference is a catalyst for high school girls who are considering
their next step after graduation and for women who are considering a career change.
Women are securing high-demand jobs in traditionally male-dominated industries at
a higher rate. Career and technical education, active recruiting efforts, and attractive
compensation and benefits packages from employers are contributing factors to that
growth,” said , dean of technical and professional education at 鶹ɫƬ and organizer
of the annual Women in Industry Conference.
Lewis-Jasper said that many women who attended the Women In Industry Conference in
past years subsequently enrolled in career and technical programs and are now working
with major companies.
Alicia Vela is featured as a “Spotlight on Success” story in the Women In Industry
Conference 2026 program. Vela spent about 20 years working in HR and accounting jobs,
but she felt like she needed a career change.
“Alicia told us that attending the conference in 2019 influenced her decision to enroll
in the 鶹ɫƬ instrumentation technology program, and attending again in
2022 validated that she was on the right path,” said Lewis-Jasper. “Alicia graduated
with an Associate of Applied Science degree, and she was hired as a multi-skilled
technician with ExxonMobil in November 2022. She was one of about 2,800 applicants
and only one of eight people interviewed for the job.”
